Strength & Learning Through Horses needs your help

Strength & Learning Through Horses is a charity partnership based in Edgware, North London. The charities work with London’s most vulnerable young people, enabling them to turn their lives around when all other interventions have failed. The secret to their success is their 8 special horses. The horses who all have traumatic backgrounds of their own teach the young people how to better recognise and control their emotions and behaviour by reflecting the body language of young people in their own behaviour.

Unfortunately due to COVID19 the stables have been forced to close its doors to clients. While staff are continuing to support young people via phone calls, online video calling and providing educational activities via email the charities have no income coming in for sessions and are struggling to cover the costs of feeding the horses.

The coronavirus crisis is exacerbating the mental health challenges of the young people the charity supports. The feedback is that young people feel like their mental health and wellbeing is in decline and they are desperate to return to the stables to see their favourite horses and start to move forwards positively in their lives again. The charities need the support of the local community to make sure they can still be there for the 300 young people who rely on their support when restrictions are lifted. The charities need to raise £5,000 towards the costs of rent and feeding the horses and are looking for support from anyone that can help. To donate please click here

In these challenging times, Barnet Together are partnering with the London Borough of Barnet and organisations across the borough to develop a community response to the challenges brought about by the Coronavirus.

Our role will be to support organisations so they can focus on delivery or perhaps to support them deliver differently to meet demand.  As a partnership, we can champion good practice, grow funds and let Generous Leadership shine.  All of these efforts will also ensure vulnerable residents are better supported.

To support local efforts, we have set up a Barnet Community Fund – open to all community and charity groups supporting the Coronavirus community effort in London Borough of Barnet.

This fund will support the following:

Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice faces a fight for its future amid Coronavirus

Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice faces a fight for its future amid Coronavirus

Coronavirus: Local children’s hospice faces a fight for its future.

With the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice is facing a fight for its future. The charity, which supports seriously unwell children and their families in North and Central London and Hertsmere, is facing an income shortfall of £2million this year.

Noah’s Ark is calling on its community to come to its aid, as cancelled fundraising events and activities have left the charity with a battle to fund its work. The children supported by the charity are immuno-compromised and therefore particularly vulnerable to coronavirus.

The charity recently opened the doors of The Ark, its state-of-the-art hospice building in North London. Noah’s Ark is now in conversation with the NHS about beds and staff being used to support the current crisis. The charity is also looking at other new ways to care for children, including online therapy sessions.

Sophie Andrews OBE, CEO of Noah’s Ark is concerned about the implications of coronavirus on the charity. She said:

“We’re all worried. But imagine if your son or daughter is seriously unwell; the threat of coronavirus is desperate and immediate for those we support. Coronavirus is life-threatening for every single one of them.

We’re concerned about how we’re going to support these children through coronavirus and beyond. Our community has been a bastion of generosity in the past and we’re once again calling on them to rally around for their local children’s hospice.”

My name is Liz Cohen and I run an ongoing voluntary project distributing clothing, bedding and general donations to people who are locally on the streets. I also help with referrals, follow-ups and signposting where possible to try and speed up the process of the service users getting the support they need. The work is predominantly carried out in Finsbury Park, Wood Green, Crouch End and Green Lanes where there are many, sleeping rough. As the temperatures drop, life on the streets can become particularly difficult. This is a request for donations to bring some warmth to people out in the cold. If you would like to donate anything in the way of the items below, please get in touch –

  • Socks (socks are the most requested item, so literally a bag of socks alone would be great)
  • Hoodies
  • T-shirts
  • Tracksuit bottoms (men’s-medium/large and women’s small)
  • Jumpers
  • Coats
  • New Underwear
  • Warm hats
  • Gloves
  • Towels
  • Toiletries: Wet wipes, toothpaste, roll on deodorant etc
  • Sleeping Bags

You can either send me a message at www.facebook.com/liz.cohen.357 or alternatively you can email me at projectinfo65@mail.com

Any items that can’t be used will go to various charities and other services helping people on the streets.
