Muswell Hill & Fortis Green Association Update – news from your local residents’ association
MHFGA Community Fund
Readers may recall that this Summer, the Association decided to break new ground by launching a Community Fund, with up to £500 available to fund local projects for the benefit of the community.
We are delighted to announce that we received a grand total of 13 applications from local groups and organisations, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who put in the time and effort to make an application. Our committee is working very hard studying the details of all applications and will shortly make a decision on which project (or projects) to fund.
The details of successful projects will be displayed on our website www.mhfga.org/fund from mid-December. Because of the large number of excellent applications that we received, we are also hoping to run a similar scheme in the near future, so please do watch this space.
Festivities at our grand old library
On Friday 15th October, the Friends of Muswell Hill Library invited us all to a very special birthday tea party – in honour of the library itself, which turned 90! The day was marked with a set of speeches by the Friends, local Councillors and even the Mayor of Haringey. Haringey Council treated us with refreshments and entertained us with a spoken word performance and a guitarist.
Following on from this you are cordially invited to the Muswell Hill Library Christmas Party on Saturday 11th December from 2-4pm. Full details have not yet been released at the time of writing but suffice to say there will be much to enjoy for adults and children alike.
The Birth of the Film Studio – in Muswell Hill!
On 28th October our members were treated to a fascinating Zoom talk by Ian Christie, a film historian whose book Robert Paul and the Origins of British Cinema was published by Chicago University Press in 2019. When Robert and Ellen Paul moved from Central London to Sydney Road, N10 in 1898, they were setting a trend that would be followed around the world. Film studios were essentially a suburban development, soon to be found on the outskirts of cities around the world. In his talk, Professor Christie let us into all the secrets of the Animatograph Works on Sydney Road and its ten-year history.

MHFGA is your local residents’ association (since 1948!) We produce six bi-monthly Newsletters per year, which are distributed to over 770 members.
