Muswell Hill & Fortis Green Association Update – news from your local residents’ association

MHFGA Community Fund

Readers may recall that last summer the MHFGA decided to launch a Community Fund, with up to £500 available to support local projects for the benefit of the community. We were delighted to receive a total of 13 applications from local groups and organisations and would like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to make an application.

We eventually settled upon a shortlist of three projects: Friends of the Highgate Roman Kiln, Muswell Hill Rhythmic Gymnastics, and Sense of Locality. After careful deliberation, we decided to fund the Friends of the Highgate Roman Kiln application in full (£285), and also to support the Sense of Locality (£115) and Muswell Hill Rhythmic Gymnastics (£100) projects. All three applications clearly demonstrated that their projects would have a significant impact on the area and the people who live here.

The Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln are aiming to bring the Highgate Wood Roman Kiln back to the Wood where it was excavated, and to create an exciting and inclusive education programme around its return. They applied for funding to create replica pottery. Sense of Locality is an artists’ collective which provides opportunities for people of all ages and learning needs to participate in creative ways to discover, record and learn from contemporary and historical viewpoints. They applied to fund a photography project with a group of local asylum seekers. Muswell Hill Rhythmic Gymnastics is a not-for-profit gymnastics club that provides classes for children in the local area. Their funds will be used to help subsidise equipment and participation costs for those who need it.

We are delighted with the success of our first Community Fund and are hoping to re-open the scheme in 2022 to fund even more projects that will impact positively on the community and the locality.

Could you be our new Membership Secretary?

Due to our current Membership Secretary moving out of the area we are looking for a replacement. The role requires numeracy and computer skills, good verbal and written communication, and good administrative skills. It is a unique opportunity to get involved at the heart of one of the largest and most active residents’ associations in London!

Our membership secretary acts as the first point of contact for new and existing members, maintains and updates the membership database and records, and helps to process applications and renewals. If you may be interested in discussing this vital and rewarding position further, please send us an email on [email protected] – thank you.

MHFGA is your local residents’ association (since 1948!) We produce six bi-monthly Newsletters per year, which are distributed to over 770 members. Membership for households is just £10 per year and gives you the chance to attend our special events, such as our guided tour of Lauderdale House. We have hosted the popular ‘Odd One Out’ competition three times, and our Christmas Charity Tombola has raised almost £800 for local causes. To join MHFGA and be kept up to date on local issues and our planned activities, visit www.mhfga.org/membership or email our Membership Secretary on [email protected]
