When will I, will I be famous?
Those with a pre-disposition to the 80’s will remember the first line to the infamous Bros song (and my apologies if that’s now firmly embedded as your ear worm!). I’m sure most of us had aspirations to be in the spotlight, but I have often wondered how many of us have a claim to fame. I don’t mean instances such as “I shook hands with Hilary & Bill Clinton during her party after she was elected to represent New York in the senate”. I mean something that makes you get a little bit giddy with excitement over your proximity to that person. So, I’m going to start and give you some examples of my tenuous links to stardom and hope to hear from you with your vicarious or direct claims to fame!
I recently attended a magazine publishers’ conference where amongst all the training and swapping of ideas we listened to people’s journeys i.e. how they came to be publishing magazines. One of the stories was from a guy called Trevor, who started working at the tender age of 15 and became a patisserie chef at a huge London hotel. His incredible skills saw him chosen to bake and decorate one of the 24 cakes that Charles & Diana had for their wedding. How amazing is that?! Staying with the baking theme, the owner of a local garage, Tony, who looks after my car, was bursting with joy as his brother George is in the current Great British Bake Off. I didn’t think I could be any more invested in GBBO but rooting for George has made it so much sweeter (no pun intended!). My last claim is via my glamorous cousin, Lorraine. Her destiny to sing and dance was firmly cemented when the school choir she was in was chosen to sing on Wizzard’s “I wish it could be Christmas every day”.
So, over to you to share your stories. I’m sure there are plenty of tales to be told and it would be lovely to run a feature about them in the magazines. If you’d like to be involved, please send your story to [email protected] by 20th November.
TTFN until the next issue
