The controversy-chasing Paul Verhoeven returns to cinemas with all his sensational pomp and grandeur fully present and accounted for, in this cautionary tale of a lesbian nun in 17th century Italy who may be experiencing religious visions. Being Verhoeven, this film isn’t afraid to flash some flesh, with brilliant French actress Virginie Efira handing in an accomplished leading turn as Benedetta. Daphne Patakia plays Bartolomea; the object of her affections, with the stern Charlotte Rampling and Lambert Wilson keeping a suspicious watchful eye over them. Its absurd, ridiculous, funny and quite entertaining in its own bizarre way, but it’s not nearly as provocative as it would have you believe it is. Benedetta won’t be to everyone’s taste, so approach with caution if easily offended.
