Film Review: Die Hard

CHRISTMAS @ THE RIVOLI BALLROOM

There’s something quite apt about spending some of the festive season at the world famous Rivoli Ballroom. This December, they’ll put on another delightful film season when their Christmas Film strand of movies are screened. Love Actually, Elf, Gremlins and Home Alone represent the classics, but Die Hard will be the one everyone will want to experience in these beautiful surrounds. Is it a Christmas movie or not though? Everyone seems to have an opinion on this, so why not head down to the Rivoli and enjoy Bruce Willis saving the day, before making up your own mind? The Ballroom is one of the last remaining 1950’s styled ballrooms left in the capital. Designed by Henley Attwater with a barrel-vaulted auditorium, it first opened in 1913 and provides a suitably warm and welcoming atmosphere for their films. Film Review: Thanksgiving

THANKSGIVING

Way back in 2007 Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez released Grindhouse, their love-letter to the cult exploitation double features that played in cinemas across the ’60s, ’70s and ‘80s. Those films always used to have great trailers, which is why Grindhouse employed the likes of Rob Zombie to write and direct fake trailers for ‘Werewolf Women of the S.S’, Edgar Wright for ‘Don’t’ and Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell for ‘Thanksgiving’.

Well now, the concept has finally come to fruition some 16 years later, albeit with a few tweaks. A mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, which is the birthplace of the American holiday. Patrick Dempsey is the town sheriff looking into the grisly murders with support from the likes of Gina Gershon, Addison Rae, Nell Verlaque, Karen Cliché and horror legend Rick Hoffman. Expect this to be a seasonal gorefest.

THE EXPEND4BLES

It’s been a long wait for one of the greatest action ensemble franchises ever to return to our cinema screens, but here we are. With Jason Statham’s character Lloyd Christmas now taking the lead, this new blockbuster movie still boasts an impressive line-up of genre talent.

And don’t worry, Sylvester Stallone is still here too, just more in a cameo role. Seasoned vets Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture are joined by new recruits included Megan Fox, Andy Garcia, Levy Tran, 50 Cent, Nicole Andrews and the martial arts legends that are Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais. Expect explosions, frenetic action, crazy stunts, ridiculous character names and lots of one-liners. What’s not to love?
