Marry Me

Global music celebrities Kat Valdez (Lopez) and Bastian (Maluma) are getting married before a world audience of fans. But Kat learns, only seconds before her marriage vows onstage, that Bastian has been unfaithful. So, she does something outrageous and decides to marry Charlie (Wilson) instead, a stranger in the crowd who has been dragged along to the concert by his friend (Sarah Silverman). With the media going crazy and Kat navigating a meltdown, perhaps her new surprise beau could be just what she was looking for all along. You’ll be able to suss this out a mile off, but the strength of the leads and some good gags make this a Valentine’s win nonetheless.

A British romantic drama that proudly wears its heart on its sleeve, Ali & Ava from writer and director Clio Barnard, shines a light onto a beautifully told love story of two lonely people in their 40s who find companionship after writing off their romantic aspirations. Both dealing with life’s constant struggles, they find a genuine spark with one another, but their coupling doesn’t come without its issues. Claire Rushbrook is sensational as Ava, a primary school helper who spends her days looking after her grandchildren, and who finds a love for life again when she’s in the company of Adeel Akhtar’s Ali – a fun-loving man who’s emotionally drained from a failed marriage. Their chemistry is superb and the story tugs at your heart strings in just the right way. A true British gem of a film.

PARIS, 13th DISTRICT

Jacques Audiard returns with this absorbing character study set in Paris, telling the tale of multiple characters who live in the city’s famed 13th District. Shot in black and white, with a sensational soundtrack and a distinct visual style that completely captivates, Les Olympiades, Paris 13e (its original title) is the first truly great movie of 2022. Having wowed the festival circuit last year, the film features sensational performances from Noémie Merlant (hot off her success from Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba and Jehnny Beth. The characters are real, the emotion is palpable, and the drama keeps you hooked throughout. Sumptuously shot too, expertly-directed and produced by Jacques Audiard, from a screenplay by Audiard, Céline Sciamma and Léa Mysius.

We’ve lived through our own disaster movie since the pandemic first hit, but now its time to sit back and get lost in another disaster scenario – one from the man responsible for Independence Day, 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow – Roland Emmerich. This time around it’s the Moon that has it in for humankind, as a mysterious force knocks it off orbit and into a direct collision course with Earth. With only weeks to live before complete annihilation, it’s left to one person, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) to save the day. With only 2 people in the world believing her plan, conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (Game of Thrones’ John Bradley) and former astronaut colleague Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) join forces with her and blast into space. Based on a true story, I believe…

Finally serving us our need for speed some 36 years after the blockbuster original, Tom Cruise returns to the heavens for this hugely anticipated sequel. Due for release months ago, Top Gun: Maverick has been waiting in the wings to save blockbuster cinema in a way that only Tom Cruise can deliver. This time around he has got stellar support from the likes of Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glenn Powell, Miles Teller (as his former co-pilot Goose’s grown up son) and a returning Val Kilmer as the cooler than cool Iceman. I’m a huge fan of director Joseph Kosinski too, who brought us visual treats in the form of TRON: Legacy and Oblivion – so at the very least this film will look absolutely stunning – especially in IMAX.
