From Struggling Student to Passionate Mathnasium Tutor
My first experience with Mathnasium was as a student. During lockdown my schoolwork took a big hit – I was unmotivated and unwilling to participate in online learning because of how frustrating I found it. I used to enjoy maths, but lockdown-learning soured my image of the subject. By the time I returned fully to school in year 10 I was behind and reluctant to catch up or properly participate in my learning. What followed was a poor result in my Year 10 mocks, and at that point my mother and I agreed to find a tutor.
We settled on Mathnasium because of the shared learning environment and a teaching method that develops independence. During my first assessment I was anxious and shy, but the friendly nature of the tutors and managers made it easy to settle in. Over the course of 8 months, my GCSE predicted grade went from 5, to 8, and eventually in my final exams I was awarded a top grade 9!
Not only did my grades improve, but so did my maths skills. I found tackling challenging problems much easier to get my head around and learnt techniques that simplified tricky topics. I also developed a passion for maths and now take it at A-Level, which I love. I applied to work as a tutor in Mathnasium in August of 2023. I had a strong understanding of the Mathnasium Method from my lessons, and I already loved the environment of the centres and trusted the people who run them. As I completed rigorous training to become an Instructor, it furthered my understanding of maths. As I started working in the Centres, my mental maths ability grew faster than before. I use the Mathnasium Methods to teach other children, but I can also use it for myself and my understanding of complex mathematics. Currently I work at Mathnasium three times a week and never get bored of the work I do. The centres are fun, welcoming, well-organised and accessible for all ages
