Palmers High School

The latest chapter in our rich history

2023 has seen the beginning of a new chapter for PGHS as we welcomed Ms Sarah Proudlove as our new Head. Ms Proudlove has taught in the UK, France and Italy, working at primary, secondary and university level. Having been involved in the creation and development of Mill Hill International, she is excited to bring her breadth of experience to PGHS.

Ms Proudlove comments, “From my first visit, I was struck by the warmth of the relationship between staff and pupils. On visiting lessons, I was impressed by the girls’ curiosity, creativity, and their obvious love of learning, all of which I will strive to foster.”

PGHS has a rich history. Our School was established in 1905 by local resident Alice Hum. Miss Hum was passionate about providing an excellent education to girls and we are proud of the legacy she gave us. PGHS evolved from 12 pupils in a small house to a thriving through-school taking girls from Nursery all the way up to GCSEs.

PGHS moved from Osbourne Road to Avondale Hall, its current Hoppers Road location, in 1918. Avondale Hall was a popular location for Suffragette meetings. It was also the only school in the area to remain open throughout World War II, even opening its doors to pupils from the local boys’ school.

In the 1950s, pupils from Year 7 upwards were expected to walk to local facilities for their PE lessons, which included hockey at Winchmore Hill Cricket Ground, tennis generally at Hazelwood Tennis Club or Grovelands Park and very occasionally – about once a year – to Barrowell Green Swimming Pool. We are lucky that nowadays our pupils have access to the full facilities at The Walker Ground (netball, tennis, hockey, football, rounders, squash, tag rugby and athletics) alongside sole use of Southgate swimming pool. Pupils in  Years 10 and 11 also make use of Southbury Leisure Centre, where they can also access gym equipment, trampolining, badminton and aerobics. And most importantly, no one has to walk!

The current School site would be unrecognisable to many of our Alumni. Always seeking to improve and develop what we can offer, many alterations have taken place over the years. Facilities and resources are constantly changing, most recently with a complete refurbishment of our School Library and Music Suite.

Palmers Green School

Making the best school choice for your daughter

Senior School years really matter and the road ahead is full of opportunities which are both exciting and daunting in equal measure. At Palmers Green High School, we are here to guide your daughter along her way to success. Knowing that your child will receive an engaging, robust and complete education in a safe environment is something you can be sure of at PGHS.  We welcome girls with the desire and potential to succeed in our diverse, aspirational and supportive school.

PGHS has small class sizes throughout the Senior School for reasons which include:

  • maximising individual teacher-pupil time
  • ensuring that all work is marked in detail
  • enabling everyone to be both supported and challenged.

PGHS is renowned for providing excellent academic success and impressive levels of value added. We also encourage high levels of participation in clubs and teams. These opportunities enable all pupils to pursue artistic, creative, musical, sporty and STEM activities.

The pastoral care and wellbeing of our pupils is a priority and everyone is known as an individual. Pupils engage in daily form time sessions, one-to-one and small group meetings with teachers, regular assemblies, and fun whole-school activities.

PGHS – TURNING POTENTIAL INTO REALITY

In July, we said farewell to our newest ‘Old Girls’, many of whom had been with us since Nursery.  One of the greatest pleasures of a through-school like PGHS is watching the extraordinary growth and development of our pupils. All are well-known to all teachers and high expectations, alongside excellent teaching, means their full potential can be realised.

Success can be measured by academic results (we have been number one in The Sunday Times’ Parent Power Table for Small Independent Schools for several years now), but also by personal growth and extra-curricular achievements.  Our excellent facilities and specialist teachers mean fantastic opportunities from Nursery through to Year 11.  There are numerous clubs (fun and competitive) and teams that pupils can take part in, with some going on to compete at county and even country level!

Small class sizes mean every child, from 3 to 16, has a clear voice. There are many opportunities for leadership and public speaking; the benefits of these cannot be underestimated in preparing our pupils to be confident, articulate members of today’s competitive society.

If you would like to see your daughter realise her full potential, visit us virtually or register for our Open Morning on Saturday 9th October via our website www.pghs.co.uk  If you have any questions, email [email protected] or call on 020 8886 1135.
