Palmers Green High School

Empowering Girls Futures

At Palmers Green High School (PGHS), we are proud of our history of providing an excellent education for girls for almost 120 years. A recent investigation into the effects of all-girls education found that alumnae demonstrated stronger academic skills, greater engagement with their studies, higher confidence in science and technology skills and stronger community involvement. Girls in same-sex schools have more opportunities to excel athletically and take on school leadership roles.

Our Senior School provides pupils with the knowledge, confidence and resilience required for success. We actively support pupils to have outside interests and hobbies and run an extensive extra-curricular programme in the Senior School. Your daughter only has one childhood and we want it to be a happy one, where school can provide an outstanding academic education but also many opportunities to make lasting memories.

We welcome girls from local primary schools who join us in Year 7 after sitting the 11+ Entrance & Scholarship Examinations. All girls settle in quickly and the high quality, specialist teaching in small classes enables them to make rapid progress and achieve impressive results across all subjects.

If you are interested in visiting us and seeing more of what PGHS can offer you, please contact the School Office on 0208 886 1135 or email [email protected]. Alternatively, please register to attend one of our forthcoming events at www.pghs.co.uk

Channing School

Why is Channing such a special school? Is it because we are one of only a handful of Unitarian schools in the world? Is it our location in Highgate, with easy access to all that London has to offer? Is it our unique evidence-based philosophy of developing Fearless Learners in the Senior School, or the captivating Channing Characters who permeate life in the Junior School? Or is it the extraordinary outcomes these experiences provide for each girl at Channing?

We are proud of our academically challenging and balanced curriculum, delivered by committed staff through inspirational teaching and the innovative use of technology. This is enhanced by a co-curricular program of activities, trips, and speakers designed to broaden the mind. What truly sets us apart are our Unitarian values of free thinking, acceptance, and inclusivity, encapsulated in the Channing Promise of kindness and respect.

We encourage independent thinking and learning, and our students enjoy studying a wide range of subjects. They leave to take up places at top universities, with many happy memories of their time here. Many return later in their careers to support the next generation of Channing girls as they embark on their journeys into the wider world

Wildwood Nature School in Dartmouth Park NW5

Wildwood Nature School in Dartmouth Park NW5 is a very small, independent primary school for children aged 4-11. We prioritise children’s well-being and spend most of our time outdoors.

Resonating with the dissatisfaction many parents feel towards the conventional education system, Wildwood Nature School was born to challenge outdated school norms. Inspired by Ken Robinson’s perspective on the need for educational reform, the school focuses on adapting to the evolving world, diverging from traditional structures.

Wildwood’s ethos centres on five core values: Well-being, Nature, Play, Community, and Empowerment. With a very high teacher to children ratio (1:5), building trusting relationships is at the core of what we do. Inspired by educational and psychological research, we use nonviolent communication, trauma-informed practices, and deliver a comprehensive well-being curriculum.

Children at Wildwood Nature School embrace nature, spending the majority of their week outdoors, following the Forest School principles and fostering a deep bond with the natural world. Play takes a central role, as we value its importance in learning and developing independence, resilience, and creative thinking. We emphasise community involvement, inviting families to actively engage and participate in the learning process.

Wildwood Nature School’s revolutionary approach aims to nurture confident, passionate learners, empowering them to think independently and contribute positively to the world.

Now accepting admissions for September 2024.

Palmers High School

The latest chapter in our rich history

2023 has seen the beginning of a new chapter for PGHS as we welcomed Ms Sarah Proudlove as our new Head. Ms Proudlove has taught in the UK, France and Italy, working at primary, secondary and university level. Having been involved in the creation and development of Mill Hill International, she is excited to bring her breadth of experience to PGHS.

Ms Proudlove comments, “From my first visit, I was struck by the warmth of the relationship between staff and pupils. On visiting lessons, I was impressed by the girls’ curiosity, creativity, and their obvious love of learning, all of which I will strive to foster.”

PGHS has a rich history. Our School was established in 1905 by local resident Alice Hum. Miss Hum was passionate about providing an excellent education to girls and we are proud of the legacy she gave us. PGHS evolved from 12 pupils in a small house to a thriving through-school taking girls from Nursery all the way up to GCSEs.

PGHS moved from Osbourne Road to Avondale Hall, its current Hoppers Road location, in 1918. Avondale Hall was a popular location for Suffragette meetings. It was also the only school in the area to remain open throughout World War II, even opening its doors to pupils from the local boys’ school.

In the 1950s, pupils from Year 7 upwards were expected to walk to local facilities for their PE lessons, which included hockey at Winchmore Hill Cricket Ground, tennis generally at Hazelwood Tennis Club or Grovelands Park and very occasionally – about once a year – to Barrowell Green Swimming Pool. We are lucky that nowadays our pupils have access to the full facilities at The Walker Ground (netball, tennis, hockey, football, rounders, squash, tag rugby and athletics) alongside sole use of Southgate swimming pool. Pupils in  Years 10 and 11 also make use of Southbury Leisure Centre, where they can also access gym equipment, trampolining, badminton and aerobics. And most importantly, no one has to walk!

The current School site would be unrecognisable to many of our Alumni. Always seeking to improve and develop what we can offer, many alterations have taken place over the years. Facilities and resources are constantly changing, most recently with a complete refurbishment of our School Library and Music Suite.

Transition From Primary to Secondary School  (Year 6 to Year 7)

Transition From Primary to Secondary School  (Year 6 to Year 7)

The transition from primary to secondary school is an important milestone in the lives of children and their families. It is for this reason that Mount House staff work collaboratively with primary schools and parents and pride ourselves on providing our new students, parents and carers with a smooth and extensive transition programme.

Our programme aims to support new students as they approach this change in their lives, ensuring they arrive in September full of excitement, feeling part of the school community and with minimal nervousness.

The programme starts with the Year 7 Pastoral Team contacting all our new joiners and their parents. This is an opportunity for the Year 7 Pastoral Team to find out a little about individual students and also for students and parents to ask any questions they may have. During conversations the Year 7 Pastoral Team will ask parents whether they give permission for one of our Year 12 students to call and speak to our new joiners. This is an opportunity for our new joiners to ask questions from somebody representing the student body.

Our Head of Year 7 and her Tutor Team will visit primary schools (where possible) to introduce themselves to our new joiners whilst informing them of the plans for the Induction Afternoon which will be held at the end of June. During the Induction Afternoon our new joiners will meet our Senior Leadership Team, their Form Tutors and Teacher and Student Heads of House. At the end of the afternoon parents will be invited to join us for drinks.

11+ Assessment Day

If you are interested  in your son/daughter joining Mount House School, we will be holding our 11+ Assessment Day  on Saturday 7th January 2023. If you have not yet registered your child, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible via our website.

On Assessment Day, your son/daughter will have the opportunity to visit our school, set in beautiful surroundings in Hadley Wood.  They will sit exams in English, Maths and non-verbal reasoning and they will also take part in some exciting group activities, enjoy lunch in our Treetops restaurant and meet me and some of our teaching staff. We hope that this will give them an idea of what it is like to be a student at Mount House School.

Mount House offers a small number of scholarships each year to students who demonstrate strong academic ability as well as a commitment to the wider life of the school through the co-curricular programme, particularly in sport and the creative and performing arts.

Here at Mount House, small class sizes are the norm with an impressive co -curricular programme and students are supported to take responsibility for their own development. We encourage them to become intellectually curious, resilient, independent young people with good moral character. We aim for each child to be nurtured and supported so they feel safe, valued and enabled to fulfil their potential.

Mount House is a happy and successful school, with an excellent record of GCSE and A-level results and an outstanding record of students achieving places at top universities. We are very proud of our school and if you have not yet visited us, we would be delighted to welcome you and your son/daughter for a tour of Mount House.
