The Royal Free Charity is proud to support the 1.6 million patients and 12,000 staff of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL). It is one of the biggest NHS trusts in the UK, spanning the North London community across Barnet, Chase Farm, North Middlesex and Royal Free hospitals.

We strategically invest in four core areas across the RFL: enhanced patient support, vital staff support, ground-breaking research and innovation, and cutting-edge medical equipment.

All this is made possible by the generosity of our supporters who help our hospitals go further and faster than the NHS could do alone.

Our services:

Support hub: We’re the only NHS charity in the UK delivering a hospital-based welfare and benefits advice service for patients. We actively prevent homelessness and help patients to access the financial and practical support they need as a result of their illness.

Volunteers: Our extraordinary volunteers enrich the experience of patients. The support they provide to NHS staff is transformational, making a direct and meaningful contribution to patient outcomes.

Complementary therapy service: While many NHS hospitals provide massage therapy for patients with cancer, we’re the only one in the UK providing a hospital-wide clinical massage service for all patients. Our specialist complementary therapy team assists patient recovery and rehabilitation as well as making a positive contribution to patients’ emotional wellbeing.

Our funding:

Groundbreaking equipment: We fund the purchase of cutting-edge equipment, most recently an £8million positron emission

tomography (PET) scanner, allowing cancer patients to benefit from more accurate and faster diagnosis. The scanner is 30 times more powerful than standard machines and allows scans of the whole body to be completed in a fraction of the time of other scanner models.

The Royal Free London hosts one of the busiest cancer services in the NHS, receiving almost 50,000 referrals each year.

Research and grants: We support innovative and early-stage research that lays the foundations for life-changing and life-saving breakthroughs. Research is key to finding better ways of diagnosing and treating conditions, and improving the technology and equipment used.

Our support for early-stage research not only increases the likelihood of translational research – with patients benefitting from the application of research findings – but also means our researchers have a strong evidence base when applying for major funding.

How you can support the Royal Free Charity

We are recruiting a network of volunteer ambassadors. Ambassadors share our passion for helping our hospitals go further and faster for the people they care for.

Ambassadors support us by raising the profile of the Royal Free Charity in their local community, introducing us to their networks and sharing our fundraising appeals. This is an entirely flexible role and all we ask of our ambassadors is that they have a strong interest in our cause.
