Brain Tumour Research Needs Your Help
The festive season always brings back painful memories for local couple, David and Kathleen Taylor.
In 2010, instead of enjoying a joyous family Christmas with their daughter, Sue and her children, they were at her bedside as she lay in a coma.
Only four weeks before that, she went to her doctor, complaining of headaches, and was quickly diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma – one of over 120 types of brain cancers.
Two weeks later, Sue passed away.
David recalls: “She was a wonderful, generous personality who had dedicated herself to helping others, including taking part in several ‘Race for Life’ charity runs as well as fundraising skydives. Full of life. Until hers was cruelly cut short.”
David took a while to come to terms with the loss of their daughter, but in 2014, set up a charity – called In Sue’s Name – to raise money to fund research into treatments and cures for brain tumours.
“I was shocked to learn that despite brain cancer killing more children and under-40s than any other cancer, only 1% of the government’s cancer research funding goes to brain cancers, “ says David.
Ten years later, David and his supporters have raised an amazing £550,000, all of which goes towards accelerating the quest for ways to avoid and alleviate the agony that so many people – and their families – experience every year as a result of this terrible disease.
More than 12,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour in the UK every year and there are estimated to be over 60,000 people living with a brain tumour. So the scale is terrifying.
And that’s why David set a target to reach £1,000,000 before the end of 2027.
“Breakthroughs are being made, but need to speed things up. The quicker we find a cure, the fewer people will die, and the fewer families will endure the awful tragedy of losing a loved one in this way.”
