Angelman syndrome doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a community that never gives up!
Spread Your Wings was founded to support Angelman families in securing essential therapies and equipment for their AS loved ones. Unlike many charities, Spread Your Wings reaches out beyond its local community, seeking passionate and skilled individuals who can make a difference. Though Angelman syndrome (AS) is rare, the challenges faced by AS families are common. By leveraging diverse talents within the community, Spread Your Wings aims to raise awareness of AS and other disabilities, fostering a culture of support and acceptance.
Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a disruption of the UBE3A gene on Chromosome 15. Individuals with AS experience severe physical & learning disabilities and, despite a near-normal life expectancy, require lifelong support.
After its first year as a charity, Spread Your Wings celebrated its community with a gala in Mayfair, London, in December 2023—two years to the day, after Leo’s diagnosis, which inspired the charity. The event was made possible by the generosity of Perry’s, REIM, Carnevale, and the Leslau family, it brought together fundraisers, advocates, business partners, donors, supporters, and other AS parents and other AS charities.
Dressed to impress, guests enjoyed fine dining, danced to the Ambassador Band and DJ Tony Perry, took their chance in the raffle and auctions, and captured memories with photographer Simon Roberts and the 360 booth. They heard updates on AS research and watched Zuzanna Jakubczak’s emotional video of Leo’s parents sharing their story. Jenny, Leo’s mother, touched everyone in that room with her heartfelt account of the impact on her family. That night, something even more extraordinary than raising £80,778 happened—each of the 400 attendees was deeply moved and left with a renewed determination to make a difference.
For the past two years, attendees and those who missed out have eagerly awaited another gala.
