Hope in Haringey sees increased demand for new mentors.

The Tottenham based charity pairs 16 to 24-year-olds with experienced workers and retirees in one-to-one mentorships, boosting the young person’s employability prospects.

Hope in Haringey’s Mentor Programme has grown from strength to strength in recent months, culminating in more young people than ever asking for mentors as they begin to plan the start of their careers.

Headed by Mentor Manager, Hannah Brooks-Plunkett, the mentor programme meets these young people at an important juncture in their lives. Intersecting with their study commitments at local sixth forms and colleges, HiH Mentors help their young person to map out their next steps – whether that is further education, training or moving directly into the world of work.

To date, more than 100 young people have been helped by the service, with the benefits of the programme finding young people excelling in their studies, taking on work experience opportunities and new jobs.

Speaking on her experience as a Mentee, Esme* said “My mentor has been good for me. I know I wanted to go in healthcare, but she helped me to understand what I wanted better. [Now] I am working towards studying pharmacology.”

These relationships are key for Hope in Haringey, which is why the charity is pleased and proud of the local people volunteering their time to become Mentors.

In January, 20 local people joined the Charity in its latest Mentor Training Event. Taking place at the Stratford Hotel under the guidance of legendary trainer, John Brooker, Mentors were upskilled to learn Solutions Focused techniques. This event would be Hope in Haringey’s largest ever face-to-face Mentor Training event, marking the strides the Mentor Programme has made until now.

However, as the charity reaches more young people, finding mentors that match their interests is the next challenge. Currently, the charity is looking to recruit mentors with backgrounds in medicine, law, finance and accounting and are hoping such individuals will join them at their next Mentor Training event on March 23rd.
